Monkey-ing around.
You know that feeling when you lean too far back in your chair and your body just jerks forward to prevent you from falling?
There’s a reason for that.
It’s something that literally all humans have in common. All humans.
It’s a deeply ingrained defense mechanism triggered to keep you alive, not for falling from a chair, but for falling from a tree.
Before we were forced to be a nomadic species crossing great plains, we were tree dwelling monkeys who avoided danger by living up high and out of reach of predators.
Unfortunately there is one big problem with living up high though, if you fell down far enough, you were a dead monkey.
Over time our great great ancestors developed the means to avoid falling and lived to pass on their genes. This defense mechanism was so incredibly useful for so long that it managed to stay with us up until present day, despite the fact that we don’t hang out in trees as much.
So the next time you feel that mechanism trigger, you’ll know that deep down, you are monkey-ing around.
